I will be using the Stop Light System in my classroom this year. The purpose of the stop light system is to help the children learn to control their behavior and follow the rules. We want our classroom to be a place where we have fun and learn together.
Here is how the Stop Light System works:
Green: Each day all of the students will begin on green.
Yellow: If your child has difficulty, the teacher will move him/her to yellow and he/she will have 3 minutes of time out. A note will be sent home for you to sign.
Red: If problems continue, he/she will move to red and have 3 minutes of time out (Depending on the behavior, the child may have to visit the principal’s office.) A note will be sent home for you to sign.
I will place a color card in your child’s communication folder to let you know what color your child was on for that day. If your child stays on green all day he/she will receive a sticker on his/her sticker chart. The sticker chart will be kept in the classroom. Once your child has filled their chart, they will receive a reward.
The first couple of weeks I will help the children understand what a green choice is and what a yellow or red choice is. We have posters in the room to help students understand these choices as well.
Green Choices: Use walking feet, Be a friend, Quiet voice, Share, Use materials safely, Clean up, Take turns, Kind words, Keep my hands and feet to myself, Listen, Raise my hand, Sit crisscross, Help others, Gentle hands, Use my words, Follow directions.
Yellow/Red Choices: Be a bully, Make someone sad, Tease, Yell, Laugh at someone, Break things, Not follow directions, Mean words, Hit, Run, Pinch, Pull hair, Push, Kick, Bite, Throw things
